Rich Chocolate Cake Instructions
The manuscript was published under the title "In Memory’s Kitchen: A Legacy from the Women in Terezín." The German recipes were translated rather literally into English to preserve the idiomatic characteristics. The measuring unit "decagram" is Austrian – 1 decagram is 10 grams, about 1/3 ounce.
"Beat 10 decagrams butter, 10 decagrams sugar, 4 egg yolks, 14 decagrams softened chocolate. Fold in 4 [egg whites stiffly beaten to] snow, 3 decagrams flour. Pour a thin layer in a cake pan, the rest [of the batter] on the baking sheet, [bake both], then crumble the cake from the sheet. In the cake pan always alternate a layer [of] cream, a layer [of] crumbs. Top with glaze or cream. Cream: 14 decagrams choc. With 5 decagrams sugar, 2 spoons water. Mix over fire. Fold in ½ liter whipped heavy cream."
