In the two photographs of the young Abigail (see also previous page), Rineke Dijkstra subtly captures the transformation of the Israeli adolescent into a soldier, her life changed irrevocably by the responsibilities and dangers of military service. Through her pose, gesture, and gaze, Abigail betrays the tension between power and vulnerability that characterizes the life of a young soldier.
