The Psychoanalytic Societies are preparing a number of central events around Freud's 150th birthday. The initiators aspire to present a joint public portrayal of psychoanalysis in the capital, which aims to address not only specialists, but also the broader audience. Their presentation will show how relevant the science founded by Sigmund Freud still is today, not only for cultural and scientific life, but also as therapeutic treatment.
On Friday, 5 May 2006, a major commemorative event will take place in the Akademie der Künste.
The slated lecturers include the egyptologist Professor Jan Assmann of Heidelberg and the psychoanalyst Dr. Werner Bohleber of Frankfurt am Main.
On 6 May a public reading of Freud texts will be held at the location of the book burning, known today as Bebelplatz,
at which Professor Wolfgang Benz, the Director of the Institute for Research on Anti-Semitism at the Technical University of Berlin will speak.
On 7 May the story of Freud's life will be presented as a travel history matinee with musical accompaniment.
In addition, the renowned historian and biographer of Freud, Professor Peter Gay, who was forced to leave Germany in 1939, will convey his vibrant impressions of the sustained influence of psychoanalysis on our culture.
These events are accompanied by a lecture and film series at the Humboldt University, whose speakers include not only psychoanalysts,
but also culture scientists, literary scholars, sociologists and philosophers.
