Anny & Sibel Öztürk

The installation "Life, the Universe and all the Rest" which the artists Anny and Sibel Öztürk created for the "How German is it?" exhibition, combines recollections of historical events with family memories. A large photo mural documenting recent history and memories of it covers the period from 1968 to the fall of the Berlin Wall and also serves as a backdrop for paintings showing scenes from the private lives of the artists, who grew up in Germany with Turkish roots.

"For us the Turkey of our childhood is a locus of desire, a place of new adventures and the emotional warmth with which we were welcomed by the relatives we visited once a year. It is also a place of novel smells, sounds and images. What we remember above all is the entirely different quality of light, and this light plays a fundamental role in the works we have developed on the basis of these memories." Anny Öztürk was born in Istanbul in 1970. Sibel Öztürk was born in 1975 in Eberbach am Neckar in Germany.
