Selected Works 1926–1974
In 2003, the Jewish Museum Berlin presented 60 works by the painter, author, and member of the Resistance movement, Carlo Levi. The exhibition was organized by the Fondazione Carlo Levi and the Jewish Museum Frankfurt to honor the painter’s 100th birthday.

Carlo Levi (1902–1975) is known in Germany mainly for his novel Christ Stopped at Eboli, (Cristo si è fermato a Eboli) which was published in 1945. He was one of the most important painters of the Italian realist movement.
Throughout his lifetime, Carlo Levi was actively involved in the struggle against fascism which cost him several arrests and two years’ exile. Political commitment and tireless efforts on behalf of impoverished farmers and laborers defined his life. Levi also dealt with these themes in his artistic works. Portraits of friends are also on display, among them famous personalities such as Frank Lloyd Wright, Ilja Ehrenburg, and Pablo Neruda.
With this exhibition, the Jewish Museum Berlin opened the new gallery on the ground floor of the Libeskind Building (since 2006 known as “Eric F. Ross Gallery”).
