The W. Michael Blumenthal Academy
A Platform and Laboratory for Diverse Perspectives
When the W. Michael Blumenthal Academy first opened in 2012, we added the Academy programs to our range of activities. The Academy supplements and complements the Jewish Museum’s program. It curates a large share of the event calendar, serves as a platform for exchange with other stakeholders in civil society, and functions as the museum’s in-house laboratory. The Academy’s mission is to reflect on Jewish culture and history in Germany from a wide spectrum of perspectives, understanding it in its entanglement and interaction with other cultures.

Platform for Encounter and Exchange
Our Academy views itself as a platform for encounter, exploration, and exchange. This is where the museum opens its doors to outside stakeholders, communities, audiences, and institutions. With these efforts, we seek to contribute to open and respectful coexistence within Germany’s society. That includes, for example, our Communities programs, which bring together different families and communities, as well as the Jewish-Islamic Discussion Group.
The Museum’s In-house Laboratory
At the same time, the W. Michael Blumental Academy is a laboratory where internal debates and reflection processes on all aspects of the museum’s work can take place. The laboratory is a resource available to all departments within the museum, especially those responsible for curation, educational work, press and PR, and management. To that end, the Academy approaches all relevant departments to co-develop programs with them.
The Academy Building
The W. Michael Blumenthal Academy is located on the site of the former wholesale flower market, the Eric F. Ross Hall at Fromet-und-Moses-Mendelssohn-Platz, the square across the street from the museum. The building is home to our Library with its public Reading Room, our Archive, the Klaus Mangold Auditorium, and seminar and workshop rooms where we hold educational programming for children, teenagers, and teachers.
