The Summer Party on July 2

Kicking off the Cultural Summer on Sunday, July 2, is the summer party with music and comedy. From 2 to 7 pm in the museum garden, guests will be able to enjoy music, comedy, street food, and varied events for children: Singer-songwriter Noam Bar, the satirical German-Muslim ensemble “Datteltäter,” and puppeteer Benno Lehmann will be performing on stage. In addition, a musical highlight is the premiere of the German-Israeli-Syrian "Mediterranean Collective" musical project with special guest Yael Badash. Every hour there will be a special tour of the exhibition Cherchez la femme and a guided tour “All around the Jewish Museum”.

Kids can design paper costumes with fashion students or have lots of fun on the bobby car course. The Future Breakfast, Feiner Herr, RefuEat, and Kofler’s Grill will be offering visitors falafel, bagels, barbecued treats, and pancakes in the plane tree grove. There is no admission charge for the garden party events, and it will take place in the glass courtyard in case of inclement weather. The guided tours and admission to the permanent exhibition will be available at a Summer Party discount price of 5 €.

Female Lineup at Jazz in the Garden

On four Sundays at 11 am, for the first time the performing jazz musicians are all women. Starting off the series is the British pianist Julie Sassoon with her quartet. French-American singer Stephy Haik, together with the Olivier Hutman Trio, will perform jazz standards from Sophie Tucker to Barbra Streisand “From Shtetl to Broadway.” Singer, composer, and cellist Illay and her band will offer a taste of her upcoming debut album. She put together a special program exclusively for the Cultural Summer in the Jewish Museum Berlin. Rounding off the series is Noëmi Waysfeld, who with the Trio Blik reinterprets Portuguese fado music into Yiddish. Parallel to the concerts on July 16, July 30, August 13, and August 27 there will be a children’s program with a variety of activities such as baking matzah.

Readings by and with strong women

Three readings from life stories of strong women will take place on Saturdays at 6 pm in the glass courtyard. American writer Molly Antepol, who became known through her debut collection of stories, The UnAmericans, offers a peek into her novel-in-progress The After Party. Iris Berben will be reading from the narrative work of Paula Buber, which was written in collaboration with her husband Martin Buber. Joined by Buber’s great granddaughter Tamar Goldschmidt, Berben will present selected texts and as yet unpublished letters. At the final event of the cultural summer, four female poets enter into a Hebrew-German dialogue under the slogan “Between the Lines.” Maya Kuperman and Zehava Khalfa, both Israelis who live in Germany, will be reading and discussing with German poets Gundula Schiffer and Heike Willingham. The readings will take place on July 15, August 5, and September 9 and are free of charge.

“Jewy & Daring!”: Long Night of the Museums

On Saturday, August 19, the museum will stay open from 6 pm to 2 am for the Long Night of Museums. Under the slogan “Jewy & Daring!” there will be hourly screenings, talks with experts, and express tours about women and men who have defied rigid social roles. The screenings in the glass courtyard will be presented every hour starting at 7:15 pm on four screens, showing scenes from two series: the highly acclaimed Amazon series Transparent, including the transgender model Hari Nef, and the docu-series Spectrums, with portraits of people from Israel’s transgender community. Filmmakers Zohar Melinek Ezra and Afek Testa Launer will be special guests, speaking following screenings from their Spectrums series with writer-journalist Daniel Schreiber.
