The first fictional virtual reality series by Dani Levy at the Jewish Museum Berlin - Press Information

On Sunday 18 February 2018, on the occasion of the 68th Berlin International Film Festival, director Dani Levy presented his first fictional series in 360-degree virtual reality, Stories from Jerusalem: FAITH · LOVE · HOPE · FEAR, at the Jewish Museum Berlin. To accompany the exhibition Welcome to Jerusalem, Levy made four short films in the Holy City using a specially designed camera construction.
"Our visitors are transported straight into the heart of events on Jerusalem’s streets. In museums, there is often a certain distance between the visitors and the objects in the cases. In this context, fictional VR films have rarely been used before, even though movies – and especially the new VR technology – are particularly suited to helping overcome that distance

The 360-degree VR technology used by Levy offers an all-round view of life in the divided city. Each of the five- to eight-minute films was shot in a single take: scenes featuring a stand-up comedian on Zion Square, a soldier at a checkpoint, or alongside a sniper above the Old City rooftops. "The scenes are shot for real, just like a feature film. And yet it is a completely new visual experience,
" director Dani Levy says of his experiment with the new technique.
In the films FAITH · LOVE · HOPE · FEAR, the spectators are sometimes observers, but sometimes the film addresses them and draws them right into the scenes. They experience the city in all its ambivalence and intensity – with immediacy and a sense of immersion. The episodes tell stories of life at a focal point of the Middle East conflict, from both Israeli and Palestinian perspectives. They highlight day-to-day tensions in the city. At the same time, they show the dry, Jewish humor that audiences of Dani Levy movies like Go For Zucker know so well.
Film showings
The films will be shown at the Jewish Museum Berlin from 3 May to 17 June 2018. They are also available from May 2018 on the ARTE360 VR app and the ARTE website: arte.tv/arte360.
