Goethe in Buenos Aires

Book launch and discussion (in German)

Documentary filmmaker and journalist Henriette Kaiser will present her book Goethe in Buenos Aires. She has collated interviews with German-Jewish refugees who succeeded in escaping to Buenos Aires during the Nazi era and made their homes there. The author has donated the footage of the interviews, which will be shown publicly for the first time at the book launch, to the JMB.

Cultural scientist Liliana Feierstein will provide perspectives on German-Jewish experiences in Argentina, as well as on the complex and diverse history of immigration. She will outline current research approaches to material culture.

To conclude the evening, Liliana Feierstein and Henriette Kaiser will talk about the past and present of German-speaking Jews in Argentina.

Henriette Kaiser was born in Munich in 1961 and studied German language and literature in Berlin and later, film direction at the University of Television and Film Munich. She works as a filmmaker, screenwriter and author. Since 2011, she has traveled regularly to Argentina for several months at a time. 

Prof. Dr. Liliana Ruth Feierstein studied in Buenos Aires, Vancouver and Mexico City and completed her Philosophy doctorate at Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf. Her research focuses on Jewish culture, history and literature in Romance-speaking countries (especially Latin America) and on theories of diaspora. Since 2017, she has been Professor of the Transcultural History of Judaism at the Institute for Cultural Studies at Humboldt University in Berlin.
