Cultural Summer Program

Summer Party and Open Day

The theme of this year’s summer party is the current special exhibition "Heroes, Freaks, and Super-Rabbis." A diverse program featuring interactive games for all the family will transform the Museum Garden into a fantastic world of comic adventure.

In the new "Mobile Museum" visitors develop magic powers to help them solve tricky riddles. Fascinating background information on the exhibition can be heard at the discussion with the comic expert Jens Meinrenken. And workshops, baking mazzah bread, and guided tours for children and adults are also all on the program.

Musical entertainment will be provided by the songwriter Eli Salzman and the jazz/pop-singer Ingrid Olava, while an American-style barbeque will be on offer to satisfy appetites.

When: 4 July 2010, 11 am to 6 pm

Admission: free

David Krakauer

A Musical and Personal Journey through Klezmer

Starting in the late 1980s, David Krakauer began a personal and musical journey through klezmer: the celebrative music of his Eastern European Jewish ancestry. On that journey, he traveled the world, established himself as one of the leading performers of klezmer, and came closer to a deeper understanding of his cultural identity. As a clarinetist, band leader, composer and soloist Krakauer has collaborated with a diverse cross section of world renowned artists including Itzhak Perlman, Fred Wesley, the Kronos Quartet, Socalled, John Zorn and Iva Bittová. Krakauer will talk with the musicologist Hyacinthe Ravet about this journey and illustrate by playing live along with examples from his many ground breaking recordings.

In cooperation with the Centre Marc Bloch.

Clarinet Bird – Jazz Talks

Reading and Concert with Maxi Sickert and Rolf Kühn

Circus tent, the persecution of Jews, the GDR, and the child prodigy from Leipzig: The clarinettist Rolf Kühn’s jazz life takes him to Benny Goodman’s penthouse and onto the stage of the Carnegie Hall. He lives in the apartment above Billie Holiday, tours with Chet Baker and Lester Young, meets Marilyn Monroe and organizes his brother’s escape from the GDR with the help of the pianist Friedrich Gulda.

The music journalist Maxi Sickert has reconstructed through talks and research one of the most unusual music biographies of the post-war era. A journey through time from the ruins of Leipzig to New York to the new Berlin. Following the reading, Rolf Kühn and his band "Tri-O" will wind up the evening with a concert.

Tri-O line up: Rolf Kühn (clarinet), Ronny Graupe (guitar), Johannes Fink (bass) und Christian Lillinger (percussion)
