Jewish Life in Argentina. Contributions to the 200th Anniversary
Press Invitation
Press Release, Tue 13 Jul 2010
The Argentine Jews today – 200 years after the founding of the state – are an inextricable part of Argentina’s pluralistic and democratic society. Their contribution to the country’s development and growth is the focus of the exhibition shown by the "Organizing Committee for Argentina's Participation as Guest of Honor at the 2010 Frankfurt Book Fair" at the Jewish Museum Berlin. "Jewish Life in Argentina. Contributions to the 200th Anniversary" illustrates the integration of the Jewish community into Argentine society – an integration based on the concept of cultural and ethnic variety, a feature of Argentina.
The guiding theme in terms of both content and design is the medium of the book as a document and symbol for the Jewish contribution to Argentine intellectual life. At the heart of the exhibition is the installation "Bookstore of Memories." Drawing from 200 selected biographies of Argentine-Jewish personalities, it tells the story of a country that sees its inhabitants’ cultural and ethnical diversity as the cornerstone of its identity.

Commemorative culture is a further theme of the installations. From an Argentine-Jewish perspective, the exhibition relates not only to the Jewish Museum Berlin but also to works such as Micha Ullmann’s "Book Burning Memorial" at Bebelplatz in Berlin or Gunter Demnig’s "Stumbling Stones." The exhibition aims to keep alive the memory of the Holocaust, the Argentine military dictatorship, the attack on the AMIA Jewish community center in Buenos Aires, but also of the Jewish community’s contribution to the development of the Argentine nation and society. The installations will be flanked by a chronological table and films showing Jewish life in Argentina in a historical context.
An exhibition by the Argentine Foreign Ministry and the "Organizing Committee for Argentina's Participation as Guest of Honor at the 2010 Frankfurt Book Fair" (Ministry of Foreign Affairs, International Trade, and Worship) in cooperation with AMIA (Asociación Mutual Israelita Argentina) and the Embassy of Argentina in Germany.
