...And Facing the Future?
Jewish History and Stories in the GDR – A Scholarly Conference Accompanying the Exhibition Another Country. Jewish in the GDR (in German)
The three-day conference examines the expectations and disappointments, as well as the involvement and experiences of Jews in the GDR. What motivated them to stay in or return to the GDR? What personal and political hopes and opportunities were tied to the new political community? To what extent did returning also mean immigrating to a socialist utopia? And how was antisemitism, both the occasionally obvious and the subtle, experienced in the GDR?
