The new permanent exhibition tells of Jewish past and present in Germany. In our tour in German Sign Language, the guide will focus on the architecture and the exhibition's visual highlights.
This could be historical objects, such as portraits of soldiers from the First World War, a wedding dress that the owner took with her when she emigrated in 1939, or photographs from 1934 that provide evidence of Jewish self-affirmation during the National Socialist era. It could also be artworks from the collection on religious topics or pictures of bourgeois families. Viewing these objects is an invitation to approach German-Jewish history from different periods and perspectives.
The guides came to Germany from Syria and Afghanistan as teenagers. They are deaf. Through their own experiences of flight, exclusion and new beginnings, they are able to personally relate to aspects of German-Jewish history presented in the core exhibition and through the Libeskind architecture.
