Talk with Music: David Krakauer
Press Invitation
Press Release, Tue 5 Apr 2011
The cultural program surrounding the special exhibition "Radical Jewish Culture. The New York Music Scene Since 1990" commences on 13 April with "Talk with Music" – a musical journey with the clarinettist and composer David Krakauer. He tells of his personal journey from the rediscovery of klezmer, the festive music of his Eastern European Jewish ancestors, to the beginnings in the early 1990s of "Radical Jewish Culture" that he was part of shaping. The talk will not only be punctuated with music samples from John Zorn’s label Tzadik Records, but also with live music by David Krakauer.

Born in Manhattan, New York, in 1956, the artist gained international acclaim with the band "The Klezmatics." In 1992, he was part of the premiere of Zorn’s epic composition "Kristallnacht" in Munich, after which he took up Zorn’s offer of producing the first album for the "Radical Jewish Culture" series by Tzadik Records.
Krakauer’s search for his musical cultural identity took him all around the world and brought him fame as one of the most sought-after klezmer clarinettists. As a crossover artist, Krakauer has worked with such diverse musicians as Itzhak Perlman, the Kronos Quartet, the Klezmatics, Socalled, and John Zorn.
The event will be in English.

The exhibition "Radical Jewish Culture" will open on 7 April. It presents a movement that blended traditional klezmer with experimental music styles, with jazz, rock, and punk in search of new forms of musical expression for Jewish identity. The concert series accompanying the exhibition entitled "New Voices in Jewish Music" curated by Greg Cohen will be on the program in May and June.
