Press Invitation

Press Release, Mon 19 Sep 2011

We cordially invite you to these cultural events in October:

Program Surrounding the Exhibition "How German is it?"

What is so difficult about being German today?

Reading and Discussion with the Author Zafer Şenocak

Following heated debates on integration and migration, Zafer Şenocak’s book "Deutschsein. Eine Aufklärungsschrift" explores how it feels to be German. He ascribes to his fellow Germans a fraught relationship to their own identity despite the event-related comfort they take in national symbolism. Şenocak sees language as playing a key role in a new self-image. Born in 1961, Zafer Şenocak is among the most highly regarded German-Turkish writers and essayists in Germany and is published regularly in major newspapers. His novels and poems have been translated into many languages.

The panel: Egemen Baǧış, Minister for European Union Affairs of the Republic of Turkey (attendance requested), Dmitrij Belkin, Jewish Museum Frankfurt/Main, Bilkay Öney, Integration Minister for Baden-Wuerttemberg, Yasemin und Nesrin Şamdereli, directors of the film "Almanya – Willkommen in Deutschland"

An event organized by the Network Migration in Europe in cooperation with the Jewish Museum Berlin, the Bahçeşehir University Istanbul, and the Center for Turkish Studies and Integration Research.

Christian Vigouroux: Georges Picquart – Dreyfusard, Exile, Minister

Justice through Meticulousness

Book Presentation with the Author

Georges Picquart (1854–1914), officer with a bright future and head of the military foreign secret service, refused in 1896 to bow to the pressure of his military and political superiors and cover up the proof of Alfred Dreyfus’ innocence. Christian Vigouroux documents the rarely illuminated story of Picquart – agnostic officer, polyglot war veteran, literature lover, and close friend of Mahler. And he asks why Picquart took it upon himself to break the silence in 1896. His story is of meticulousness, justice, and innocence, of unbending modesty and the mystery of courage.

Organized by the Centre Marc Bloch in cooperation with the Jewish Museum Berlin.

When: Friday 7 October 2011, 10 am

Where: Centre Marc Bloch, Friedrichstr. 191, Georg Simmel Hall

Admission: free

Lizzie Doron: „Das Schweigen meiner Mutter"

Book Presentation with the Author and the Translator Mirjam Pressler

The novel tells of a woman’s ardent search for traces of her father. Was he a "kapo" or a partisan, a traitor or a hero? As a child, she had asked about him again and again, to no avail. Long since grown up, she begins to investigate. The search becomes an attempt to win back a lost childhood and to unravel an – as soon becomes apparent – absurd secret.

A cooperation with the Literaturhandlung.

When: Tuesday 11 October 2011, 7.30 pm

Where: Old Building, 2nd level, Great Hall

Admission: 9 €, reduced rate 7 €. Ticket reservation (for non-journalists) at the Literaturhandlung on tel. +49 (0)30 8824 250

Thomas Blubacher: "Paradies in schwerer Zeit" (Paradise in difficult times)

Book Presentation with the Author

Many emigrants who – after the Nazis assumed power – fled Germany and Austria for America hoped Hollywood would bring new job opportunities. Thomas Mann, Vicki Baum, Salka Viertel, Lion Feuchtwanger, Bertolt Brecht and Max Reinhardt are just a few of those who found paradise in the Pacific Palisades region, in which it was nevertheless difficult to live because very few were able to build on their great successes.

A cooperation with the Literaturhandlung.

When: Monday 17 October 2011, 7.30 pm

Where: Old Building, 2nd level, Great Hall

Admission: 9 €, reduced rate 7 €. Ticket reservation (for non-journalists) at the Literaturhandlung on tel. +49 (0)30 8824 250
