The first anti-Hitler leaflets appear at Munich University in 1942. Sophie Scholl coincidentally discovers that her brother Hans and three of his friends are the initiators of this campaign. At first she tries to dissuade her brother of taking further action, but then she herself becomes part of the resistance. By linking to other resistance groups, the friends' work becomes ever more dangerous until they are ultimately denounced and condemned to death.

The film about the White Rose resistance group was very well received by West German audiences. The closing credits state that the death sentences of the People's Court were still legally valid at the time of the film release.
