Simon Riznik, a Polish Jew, finds shelter in a Ukrainian village at the beginning of the Second World War. When the German Wehrmacht raids the Soviet Union and occupies the village, SS members force him to play a sadistic game: Simon is to race against a horse to save the lives of his family.
