Bertha Pappenheim, women’s rights activist and founder of the Jewish Women’s Association, translated the Mayse-Bukh (story book) in 1929 – a collection of Yiddish stories, myths and legends first printed in Basel in 1602. These all sorts of stories, as Pappenheim refers to them in her preface, are based on traditional Jewish stories from the Midrash and the Talmud, but also from fairy tales and oral traditions.
