Zvi Aviram – Brushes with Death
Conversations with Contemporary Witnesses – Experiences and Fates of German Jews During the Nazi Era (video recording available, in German)
Zvi Aviram was born in January 1927 in Berlin as Heinz Abrahamsohn. As a result of the November pogroms of 1938, he was expelled from the state school and from then on attended the Jewish school in Rykestraße. From age 14, he had to perform forced labor in the arms industry. During the so-called factory operation on 27 February 1943, his parents were arrested and deported and he himself went into illegality.

Through friends he came into contact with a small underground group of Jewish youth called Chug Chaluzi. With their help and the support of other people, he managed to survive until the end of the war, was arrested twice and only narrowly escaped death. After the war he worked for the Jewish Agency in Munich and immigrated to Palestine in 1948. Today he lives in Ra’anana near Tel Aviv.
