“If you want to be an artist, get in touch!”

Workshop for students aged 14 and over on the current exhibition Access Kafka

The exhibition Access Kafka searches for a connection between literature and art based on a question that is omnipresent in Kafka's work and also touches on the core of our social self-image: Is someone granted or denied access? To this end, manuscripts and drawings from Franz Kafka's estate are juxtaposed with contemporary artworks by Yael Bartana, Maria Eichhorn, Anne Imhof, Martin Kippenberger, Maria Lassnig, Trevor Paglen, Hito Steyerl and other artists.

In the workshop, the pupils first work in small groups to understand a short prose text by Kafka. This text serves as a foil for a free exploration of the exhibition with the task of making connections between the text they have read and works of art they have chosen themselves. The results are presented and discussed in a joint discussion.

The workshop makes it possible to experience how literature can provide access to art and, conversely, how art can provide access to literature.

The picture shows a work of art by Mary Flanagan depicting floating walls in front of a blue sky over a blue sea.
