I'm Writing to You From Berlin. An Evening with the Lasker-Wallfisch Family

By writing to her grandparents, who had been murdered by the Nazis, Maya Lasker-Wallfisch has forged a relationship beyond the catastrophe of the twentieth century. After that, a new life began for her, in a new city, with a new mission: to transform the place where the tragedy had unfolded into a home, somewhere she could feel at peace. To this end, she went in search of Berlin’s Jewish past and present: the Weißensee Cemetery, Pestalozzistraße, Platform 17 in Grunewald. In the reflection of these places and in dialog with her grandparents, she saved herself, her family, and her Jewish origins.

Maya Lasker-Wallfish, born 1958 in London, has worked as a psychoanalytic psychotherapist for more than twenty years. She focuses on the transformation of transgenerational trauma. Together with her mother Anita Lasker-Wallfish, she fights for a living culture of remembrance and against antisemitism.
